VA Approved Home Care for Veterans Throughout Fremont & the San Francisco Bay Area
VA Home Health Aide (HHA) and Homemaker Program
Under the VA Home Health Aide (HHA) and Homemaker Program, veterans are eligible to receive a maximum of 12 hours of home health care per week. To determine eligibility and suitability for this program, all potential care recipients undergo a comprehensive evaluation for geriatric extended care (GEC) by a VA Administration registered nurse (RN), social worker (SW), or a medical doctor (MD). Qualification for this program is contingent upon meeting the following criteria:
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Dependency – The veteran must demonstrate a dependency on assistance for three or more activities of daily living (ADLs). These essential ADLs encompass fundamental self-care tasks, including but not limited to bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, toileting, and grooming.
Significant Cognitive Impairment – In addition to ADL dependency, the veteran must exhibit a significant level of cognitive impairment, facing challenges that affect memory, decision-making, problem-solving, and overall cognitive functioning.
The VA Home Health Aide and Homemaker Program aims to provide essential support and assistance to veterans who meet these criteria, ensuring they receive the appropriate care and assistance needed to enhance their quality of life and promote their wellbeing while residing in their own homes.
VA Respite Program
The respite care program covers respite care and temporary home care for veterans. To qualify, the program requires applicants to undergo a comprehensive interdisciplinary assessment conducted by a team of social workers, medical doctors, and registered nurses and must meet one of the following criteria:
- Display three or more ADL dependencies
- Exhibit significant cognitive impairment
VA Aid and Attendance Benefits and Housebound Allowance
VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits provide additional monthly payments for eligible veterans and survivors who require assistance with daily activities or have limited mobility. To determine if your loved one qualifies for these benefits, consider the following criteria:
Assistance Required – Needing help with activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing
Housebound Status – Spending a significant amount of time confined to the home due to illness or a disability
Nursing Home Resident – Residing in a nursing home due to physical or mental disability
Vision Impairment – Eyesight is severely limited even with corrective lenses
To apply for VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits, submit a completed VA form or utilize VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance). Remember to include related evidence and provide details about your loved one’s daily routine and specific limitations.
Please note that veterans cannot receive both Aid and Attendance benefits and Housebound benefits simultaneously.
VA Form 10-10EZ
In order to seek VA health care services, veterans can utilize VA Form 10-10EZ. Enrolling in VA health care is a prerequisite for receiving care at VA health facilities or having coverage for care through an approved non-VA provider in the community.
Retired U.S. veterans who are eligible for VA medical benefits can receive high-quality professional home care services from compassionate caregivers who are dedicated to veterans and their spouses. We look forward to helping you decide what options are best for you and your loved one.
